Throughout the the module, i have learnt many useful things. The most important point would be using other forms of researching the internet. Other forms like Meta-search and directories.
This is useful as for the most, search engines like google cannot give me what i want.
Although there were parts of the lesson that were dull, overall i felt that EIR has been a wonderful journey in teaching me how to effectively research the internet, and i am sure others benefited as well.
Thank you EIR :)

A dream budget
If given, i would like to go to Japan, Tokyo. More specifically, a district called Akihabara. Akihabara is known as Japan's electronic district, but it also houses Japan's Anime and Manga. It is the main area for Anime and Manga enthusiast like myself.
Website selected: http://www.japantravelinfo.com/top/index.php
I feel that the currency and coverage are most important. This website is current as it is updated daily, as can be seen from the main page in the events box.
Currency is the most important to me as i would want to know if i can expect to see the attractions when i do get to Japan, and whether the info is still relevant. I mean, we go overseas to feel good right? Other details, such as the purpose and usability, are also important. For purpose, it is clearly understood in the title “Japan. Endless discovery” and by the website link, www.japantravelinfo.com/top/index.php
However, when i really think about it, while these factors make you certain than you will know what to expect, travelling should be a journey itself. Hence, reliability should only be a guideline we should follow. While the information of the website does give relevant information, I feel that we should not use them too much. That would only cause the excitement to drop.
Back to the topic at hand, this website is good in a sense that the information is accurate and up to date. In addition, the website is also easy to navigate. With different tags presented at the homepage, it is easy to navigate. There is also a contact us option so it is entirely possible to ask if we have queries.

Reflection 10/1/2012. Practical 6
Practical 6 teaches me about using invisible web, or databases. I find that it has less information, in terms of pages, but more relevant than using a search engine. If i were to rank it, i'd say that Databases rank about the same as meta search engines. They both can give me the right information i want. However, Databases are better in a sense that it can give relevant information and articles. Unlike subject directories, databases are not restricted by categories.
I have decided on using ProQuest for my topic. Why? I feel that it tops the rest, when researching on my topic, when it comes to ease of use. It's information is also up to date. The information it gives is also more relevant than most others.
If i were to pick a database for my course, i would still choose ProQuest. LexisNexus is also an option for me. Both show reliable information when concerning my course. The others such as EBSCO, do show results as well but ProQuest and LexisNexus show more relevant results.

First day of lesson
The first lesson was somewhat... surprising. My initial thought upon arriving was that EIR was just about... researching effectively using the internet. Well, it is as expected but the lesson was a little hard to absorb. I was able to understand it but did not expect such a serious lesson. Guess there is no free food after all.
Having to do a worksheet sure brings me back to secondary school...
I could handle it fine. Most of the practical was practical. Probably the most hardest part was the online shopping. I only use like... 3 sites... While doing the praticals, I found out that overall, it was not as bad as i thought.
When comparing an Advocacy website, such as the WWF(http://wwf.panda.org), to a online shopping website, such as Hobby Search(http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/), the main differences are as follows.
Firstly, Advocacy websites aim to convince you to their cause, be it buying a product or donating, while Shopping websites aim to offer you choices in the form of products. While this may seem like they are employing advocacy, shopping websites also offer a range of products and don't really promote their product in full page essays. Rather, they use the original appeal of the product to sell it.
Secondly, Advocacy websites usually offer one product, or thing to do, while shopping websites offer a range.
Lastly, Advocacy websites are lead by the head of the organisation it is about while Shopping websites are a base for different companies to post up their products.
While researching for group topic, i found myself more drawn to personal blogs/websites as a method to confirm my researching. My group topic is Role and relevance of traditional customs in modern society. So, maybe getting peoples' personal view is more beneficial to me.
For my case, i needed a personal touch to what ever information i was getting from the website. For others it might be different. It is important to know the purpose of websites as different websites have different aims. Example would be comparing Health promotion board to a health website such as http://fitbell.com/. While both websites have point about keeping a healthy lifestyle, Health promotion Board has a purpose of imposing a healthy diet from young, and that it's information is more diverse. http://fitbell.com/ on the other hand is more focused and offers an option to post comments, allowing you to get information from people who have read the page.
A Website that i regularly go to when wanting to search information about Cardfight Vanguard is http://cf-vanguard.wikidot.com/. It provides me with the latest updates of the game. While there is an official webpage, http://cf-vanguard.com/en/, the wiki focuses on giving pre release information. That is something i want. The official webpage only provides information about the game in general. Such as how to play.
Can't wait to try second life.

$500.... hmm
When i think of $500, i think of getting quite a lot. But then again, its only $500.. Haha yes, the things i want are really expensive. Somehow, i control my desires.
Okay, back the topic.
First thing on my list would be a Playstation 3 (PS3). Its actually considered to be a old device, made in 2006. Why a PS3? Well, first off, I am not much of a gamer but i have wanted this for a really long time. I guess its the impulse to get a game console? haha. One of my main reasons for wanting a PS3, other than the uncontrollable urge, is that most games that i like are on that console.
A playstation 3. It costs $300++ last i checked at a local store and costs roughly 250++ at ebay.
And here are a few titles.
There are other things i would want to get as well. Things such as the entire collection of "Green lanturn, the Blackest night" (Each volume costs roughly $10 to $20 at Amazon.com and there are 9 volumes),and a tablet pc.
Some other website that i went to was Hobby Search (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/). Reason i chose this website was because it was it is one of the few trust worthy websites i found. It offers a range of Japanese Anime related goods. It is actually similar to other websites such as Otacute (http://www.otacute.com/).
However, when i think about it, that is just buying it as i have money to spare.
I guess something practical i would want to use the money for is to get myself a door for my room.
After giving some careful thought, while i was typing, it hit me that i am not a very filial son. Since i cant really decide on what to get, and that i won't die without something extra, I would give $500 dollars to my mother. Since she is the sole breadwinner of the house.
Well, thats a wrap today. The next post is not too soon away!
Ducks looks cute when they walk, wagging their tails. I wonder if their tail was there to cause that effect on others.
